France Telecom shows interest in IEC fiber optics venture
Sources inform Globes that France Telecom SA is interested in fiber optics venture. France Telecom is expanding is activity outside its home market, and is seeking new investments in the Middle East.
IEC plans to embark on a road show in October to find an investor to buy 51% of the subsidiary that it plans to set up to operate its telecommunications infrastructures, which will be based on the utility's fiber optic network. France Telecom has contacted IEC for information about the venture.
For the road show, IEC has to show potential investors at least the provisional license that it is due to receive for the venture. IEC wants a special general license from the Ministry of Communications as one who must commit to providing universal service nationwide to all telecommunications operators seeking to use the utility's fiber optic network.
Despite France Telecom's interest, there is little chance that it will be allowed to enter Israel's telecommunications sector because of its extensive business in Arab countries. These relations previously prevented it from bidding for Bezeq Israeli Telecommunication Co. Ltd.
